Unfortunately, no, the Government requires that only Native English speakers can teach in Taiwan.
- HOW OFTEN WILL I GET PAID?
Most schools will pay you monthly.
- HOW LONG CAN I TEACH IN TAIWAN?
You will initially start out with a one-year contract. You can teach in Taiwan as long as you are able to keep getting your Visa/ARC renewed. Many teachers stay 2-3 years.
- WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO TEACH IN TAIWAN?
(1) A bachelor’s degree or a 2/3 year program and TESOL
(2) No teaching experience required
(3) We require a one-year commitment
(4) Native English speakers with a passport from an English-speaking country; Canada, US, South Africa, UK, Australia, New Zealand
(5) As of June 14, 2017, the Taiwan government requires that all foreigners applying to work in Taiwan submit a NATIONWIDE “criminal record check” conducted by their passport issued country (for example, a FBI check for US citizens and a RCMP check for Canada citizens).
- WHY SHOULD I TEACH IN TAIWAN?
Taiwan is a safe place where you can easily save some money and enjoy international adventures. It is close to some great vacation spots like the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia; etc. The weather is also great and it is a good place to learn Chinese and make some new friends.
- HOW MUCH CAN I SAVE IN TAIWAN?
It is pretty cheap in Taiwan to live, especially compared to other Asian countries and the salaries are pretty good along with the standards of living. You can easily save $2,000 US or more if you work hard.
- HOW SOON CAN I START?
Once you have submitted your application and are accepted, you can start working right away.
- HOW WILL I BE PAID?
You will be paid in NTD (New Taiwan Dollars) most schools will pay cash monthly, some will pay you by direct deposit.
- HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I MAKE IN TAIWAN?
This really depends on you. Your school contract should pay you $60,000+ NTD per month and once you are established at your school they may give you more hours as they are available. As you pick up other jobs and private lessons you can get close to $100,000 NTD but you will be super busy. In the summer July/August there are many hours available everywhere as regular school in Taiwan is on a break and many schools have more programs/classes available.
- HOW WILL I GET AROUND?
Normally teachers live close to their school so you could find a place close enough to walk to school, but many teachers purchase a scooter to get around or Taiwan has great transit so you could take the train/buses as well.
- HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED TO GET SETTLED IN TAIWAN?
Bring as much as you can but if you start working right away, you will have income coming in quickly. You will need money for an apartment, most teachers share an apartment with other teachers and it can range from $6,000NT in a smaller town to $18,000NT+ if you want your own place in Taipei.
Once you are at your school other teachers can assist you in locating an apartment, and your school will give you some options as well. Also, many teachers purchase a scooter once arriving and they can range from $5,000NT to over $20,000NT. $4,000 US would be more than enough to get settled.
